Why do I read? I read to travel. I can escape to new places, or even travel away from this planet or universe. I can meet new people and become immersed in new communities, all while staying in the comfort of a fuzzy blanket and a bowl of soup.
Why do I read? I read to gain control. When you read, you can create characters and scenery in your head. You can imagine if a character's hair is a soft, caramel brown, or a deep, dark chocolate brown. You have control over what you see. When you watch TV shows or movies, you lose that ability. You can no longer think for yourself because the images are handed to you. Reading gives you the control to imagine a story the way YOU want to.
Why do I read? I read to learn new writing techniques. I am exposed to new writing crafts when I read. I can apply these crafts to my own writing to make it more interesting. By looking at the writing crafts of authors, I can begin to gain an appreciation for the thought they put into their novels.
Why do I read? I read to satisfy my thirst for knowledge. I've loved to learn ever since I was little. Unlike most kids, I've always loved school. I've never understood why most people don't. School gives you a chance to learn about the world around you! There are few things I find more satisfying in life than making a connection from something I learn in school to something in the real world. I love the feeling you get when something just clicks and a lightbulb goes off in your head. Books help me to make these connections. They teach me about any subject I want them to!
I truly hope this gets you thinking about why you enjoy reading. Reading opens up whole new worlds, and it certainly doesn't hurt those SAT scores, either.

ReplyDeleteI love how you give great personal description of why you like to read. You made a good point on that books can let your imagination take over while television and moives don't allow you to do that.
